Morgan Knibbe wint Zilveren Luipaard
De korte documentaire Schipbreuk van Morgan Knibbe is tweemaal in de prijzen gevallen op het Locarno International Film Festival. In de Internationale competitie voor korte film Pardi di Domani, won de film de Pardino d’argento (Zilveren Luipaard).
Daarnaast ontving de film de nominatie voor de European Film Awards van Locarno. Dit houdt in dat de film automatisch genomineerd is voor deelname aan de European Film Awards in de categorie Korte Film.
Schipbreuk is geproduceerd door Dieptescherpte, voor De Correspondent en beleefde haar internationale première tijdens het Locarno Film Festival. Het is de eerste film van Morgan Knibbe die in 2012 afstudeerde aan de Nederlandse Filmacademie met de documentaire Twist in the Fabric of Space.
De film speelt zich af op het Italiaanse eiland Lampedusa, waar in oktober 2013 voor de kust een boot vol Eritrese vluchtelingen strandde. Meer dan 360 mensen kwamen om. Abraham, één van de overlevenden, wandelt door een scheepskerkhof en herinnert zich levendig wat er is gebeurd. Aan de andere kant van de haven breekt de chaos los, terwijl honderden doodskisten worden getransporteerd naar een militair schip.
Op dit moment is Morgan Knibbe zijn lange documentaire Those who feel the fire burning aan het afronden, waarin hij de kijker heel dicht en persoonlijk mee laat reizen met de vluchtelingen. De filmische ervaring maakt de situaties invoelbaar, maar het oordeel is aan de kijker zelf. De film wordt waarschijnlijk in het voorjaar van 2015 uitgebracht.
The short documentary Shipwreck by Morgan Knibbe has won two awards at the Locarno International Film Festival: the Pardino d’argento (Silver Leopard, 5000 CHF) for best short film and a nomination for Locarno’s European Film Awards (2000 CHF). Now Shipwreck is automatically nominated for the European Film Awards in the Short Film category.
Shipwreck had its international premiere at the Locarno festival. The film is produced by Deep Focus. It is the first independent film by Morgan Knibbe who graduated from the Netherlands Filmacademy in 2012 with A Twist in the Fabric of Space.
On three October 2013, a boat carrying 500 Eritrean refugees sunk off the coast of the Italian island Lampedusa. More than 360 people drowned. Abraham, one of the survivors, walks through a graveyard of shipwrecks and vividly remembers the nightmarish experience. Meanwhile at the harbor, hundreds of coffins are being loaded onto a military ship.
Morgan Knibbe is currently finishing his feature documentary Those who feel the fire burning which offers a unique glimpse into the everyday life of real refugees, but in an aesthetic way never seen before. The film is expected to be released spring 2015.
